Frustrated by the Conventional Media Play Software Options? Try the VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player (VLC) is a portable media player with cross-platform and streaming media capabilities. It evolved from the VideoLAN project and functions on all desktop operating systems. VLC works on mobile platforms as well. It is a simple app, available in Apple’s app store, from Google Play and in the Windows Store.

The History

The original VLC media player came to be from the VideoLAN academic project, started in 1996. It was designed to stream video from satellite dishes across a campus wide network at École Centrale Paris. After it was rewritten from scratch in 1998, it received the blessing from the École Centrale Paris headmaster, which prompted its GNU license application and subsequent public release in 2001.

Even though it is still the same client to server video streaming software, it has materialized into worldwide distribution by the non-profit organization VideoLAN. The name was ultimately changed from VideoLAN to the current VLC Media Player. Interestingly, the traffic cone icon is still used. It’s representative of the old traffic cones collected by the École Centrale Paris Networking Students’ Association, and although graphically enhanced, still is used today.
